ANZFSS 2010 Public Night

Life Technologies presents an ANZFSS 2010 Public Night featuring US guest speaker Debbie Smith, who will discuss the impact of technological advances of DNA evidence used in sexual assault cases.

This will be an opportunity to hear how Smith’s life changed when the man who had raped her six years earlier was positively identified through DNA evidence. As her assailant was in jail, the DNA identification gave her final proof that he would not ‘come back’ for her as he had threatened.

Smith’s story prompted changes in legislation (The Debbie Smith Act of 2004 and The Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act of 2008) related to the collection and analysis of DNA in sexual assault cases in the USA.

Smith’s husband, Robert, who was a law enforcement officer at the time of the crime, will also present his perspective.

The night is part of the 20th International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (ANZFSS).
