An economic study paper from a recent UNESCO conference demonstrates under-employment of scientists coinciding with a shortage of technical support, and shows up the need to present science at schools both in terms of research careers and applied career options.
While high quality PhDs help meet innovation and commercialisation goals, skilled technical support must not be neglected. Children should also have skilled technical career choices, as the study found that the availability of a technically skilled workforce to produce new technology goods is what will have an impact on the economy and general uptake of new technologies.
