A $2 million postdoctoral Fellowship program will strengthen linkages between universities and the CSIRO and produce economic and scientific benefits for Australia. The Australian Research Council (ARC) and the CSIRO announced that up to 10 ARC Postdoctoral Fellowships (CSIRO), each for three years, will be awarded for funding commencing in 2003.
The Fellowships will expose young researchers to both the strategic research framework in which the CSIRO operates and the fundamental research framework of university research.
The ARC program, known as Linkage - Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship (CSIRO), comes under the umbrella of its National Competitive Grants Program. The ARC and CSIRO will each contribute $1 million to the scheme over a three-year period.
The Fellowships will have the effect of cementing the collaboration between universities and the CSIRO, and will contribute to the building of strong research teams.
Fellowship holders will be members of teams comprising both university and CSIRO researchers. These teams will provide the research project support, and the program will pay the Fellowship salaries.
ARC CEO Professor Vicki Sara noted "Both the ARC and CSIRO place great importance on nurturing early career researchers and the provision of quality research training. This program has the potential to greatly enrich the experience of young researchers by exposing them to these two complementary environments".
CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Geoff Garrett welcomed the new scheme. "We are delighted to help found this new program. As science is getting more complex, the ability to form alliances and partnerships is becoming ever more important. A scheme like this will help people to develop the networking skills early in their careers that will be essential to science in the future."
