Within a laboratory, there are multiple safety procedures that must be taken to ensure that a workplace is operated smoothly and efficiently. Pro-Visual Publishing, in collaboration with Science Industry Australia and Australasian Laboratory Managers Association, announces the latest edition of the Laboratory Guide to Workplace Safety. The guide aims to provide beneficial safety information and awareness when working in a laboratory environment.

This year’s edition offers information on chemical classification and labelling - the process of identifying and evaluating detrimental chemicals that may cause harm to human health and safety. There are specific procedures available when handling certain chemicals that assist in identifying hazardous chemicals. The disposal and storage of chemicals is vital in the workplace as it will potentially prevent toxic explosions from occurring.

Additional topics featured on this year’s guide include sterilisation procedures in laboratories and personal protective equipment (PPE). These topics outline the elimination of possible transmission of infectious agents to laboratory workers, the general public and the environment. Furthermore, personnel responsible for carrying out the sterilisation and disinfection processes must wear protective clothing. The guide ensures that the correct use of PPE is put into practice in a laboratory environment.
