Giving laboratory managers a voice

Wednesday, 01 November, 2006

At the opening of the 2006 Laboratory Managers Conference at the Carlton Crest Hotel, Melbourne, the SIA's executive director, Duncan Jones MAICD, announced the formation of the Australasian Laboratory Manager's Association (ALMA).

"Laboratory managers' needs have not been adequately looked after and they have not had effective representation and networking opportunities," said Jones.

"Laboratory managers often hold the purse strings controlling tens of millions of dollars and have to make many decisions on a daily basis that have long-lasting effects and ramifications.

"Additionally, in their roles they are effectively running divisions within larger organisations with all the attendant HR, OH&S, regulatory and record keeping requirements.

"ALMA will seek through it's collegiality, networking and contacts with governments and regulatory bodies to help ease the daily burden of these often onerous tasks."

Geoffrey Burge, president of the SIA's National Council, noted that because ALMA is formed as a division of the SIA, ALMA's members will have access to and benefit from the extensive network of governmental contacts the SIA has built up over recent years.

"Additionally, the ALMA membership will have access to the services provided by SIA corporate members. Services like training and educational opportunities tailored for the needs of the ALMA membership," said Burge.

"I urge laboratory managers from all disciplines to join ALMA and help build the association into a vital, strong and vibrant voice for all."
