Phasefocus Livecyte live cell imaging system

Livecyte enables continuous non-invasive imaging and analysis to provide insights into cell populations that could be missed using other microscope systems.

Fluorescent labelling is a common methodology used to enhance cell contrast, but this presents a paradox of added cost and altered natural cell behaviours given its perturbation to cells, thus impacting experimental outcomes. Livecyte’s label-free imaging eliminates the constraints of phototoxicity and population averaged analysis, and should therefore provide a more realistic account of treatment-driven changes in natural cell behaviour.

By applying patented Ptychographic quantitative phase imaging (QPI) technology, Livecyte generates high-resolution, fluorescent-like images, without the need for dyes or probes. Individual cells can be readily defined and tracked for a number of weeks, with the cells remaining viable at the end of this period.

Easy-to-use dashboards provide a suite of morphological metrics that include dry mass, cell area, perimeter, thickness, sphericity plus kinetic behaviour, single-cell lineage tracing and more. The technology offers the versatility to measure and monitor sensitive cell types such as primary cells and is being used to develop novel stem cell therapies using treatments that target cell motility, cell cycle, morphology or proliferation.

Unlike other QPI systems, Livecyte’s Ptychography technology removes the need for plate inserts or expensive consumables; this should reduce running costs compared to comparative systems. Large fields of view (up to 4 mm2) in an assay-relevant plate format (up to a 96-well plate) mean the behaviour of many cells can be captured, making results statistically robust.
