Enzo Life Sciences high-purity native bacterial and viral antigens

Bacterial protein toxins are among the most powerful human poisons known and can retain high activity at very high dilutions. Venoms and toxins often specifically interact with a macromolecular target in the body and as such are important tools in studying receptors, ion channels and enzymes.

Antigens are widely used for immunodiagnostic assays such as ELISA, but recombinant proteins can often provide decreased sensitivity and specificity. Enzo Life Sciences offers a broad range of native bacterial and viral antigens to fill this need for the research and in vitro diagnostics markets. Wherever practical, the antigens are isolated and purified from culture. In cases where antigen yield may be very low, the antigens are produced using the latest mammalian expression systems.

Features include: high specificity and sensitivity; minimal lot-to-lot variation; reproducible scale-up for bulk quantities; lyophilised format for extended shelf life. Typical applications include: serology-based ELISA assays; positive controls; cytotoxicity testing; immunogens (toxoids) to illicit the optimum immune response.

Medically relevant viral recombinant proteins produced in bacteria, yeast or insect cells seldom undergo correct post-translational modification due to the expression host lacking the same cellular machinery as the natural host. By contrast, proteins produced entirely in human cell lines ensure that the resultant antigens are expressed to a high level, are in their native folded state and possess all relevant post-translational modifications. This approach offers products which deliver optimal antigenicity for use in vaccine development and serological-based diagnostic assays.
