Instrument-grade acetylene

Monday, 06 April, 2009 | Supplied by: Coregas Pty Ltd

Coregas has invested in a new $20 million liquid nitrogen plant extension at Port Kembla and a new acetylene facility (the nitrogen plant is already operational).

By building its own acetylene plant, Coregas can not only secure supply but also timing of supply to ensure reliability and quality.

The multi-million dollar acetylene plant, located at Coregas’ head office in Yennora NSW, manufactures varying grades of acetylene — industrial purity for cutting and welding in the manufacturing industry and higher purity instrument-grade acetylene. The higher purity acetylene is used as a fuel gas in combination with zero air/nitrous oxide for atomic emission spectrometry (AES) and atomic absorption telemetry (AAS) where higher flame temperatures are required to analyse alkaline earth materials such as beryllium, magnesium and calcium.

The acetylene plant sits alongside Coregas’ specialty gases laboratory which manufactures a range of pure gases and calibration gas mixtures.
