Stable isotope-labelled tracers are suitable for studies involving the metabolism and various metabolites of a lipid for the quantitative evaluation of major lipid pathways. For this reason, deuterium-labelled compounds are effective for lipidomics research.

Matreya produces high-purity deuterated glycosphingolipids for the identification and quantification of gangliosides in samples and biological systems using mass spectrometry techniques. In addition to its range of D3-labelled glycosphingolipids, the company now has a set of D9-labelled gangliosides and a globotriaosylceramide.

The deuterated glycosphingolipids are said to enable improved separation of the labelled m/z from the naturally occurring material and its abundant isotopes. With a better means for separation, users should be able to improve the quantitation of these compounds in biological samples by LC-MS/MS methods.
