Applications open for 2024 Gilead Fellowship Grants Program

Gilead Sciences Australia has launched the Gilead Fellowship Grants Program for the 12th time, with a total of $300,000 on the line to be shared by the successful grant recipients. The program is available for medical researchers working in five key areas: HIV, chronic viral hepatitis, haematological oncology, solid tumours (especially breast, lung and bladder) and invasive fungal infections.

Since the program’s inception, over $3 million has been given to help Australian researchers raise the bar in patient care and share Gilead’s ambition to fight against the world’s most devastating diseases. Furthermore, in order to encourage innovative local studies that may fall outside of traditional grant funding criteria, Gilead has provided over 70 Fellowship Grants for clinical and social investigation and research with a ‘real world’ focus across urban and rural Australia.

Associate Professor Catherine MacPhail, from the University of Wollongong, was previously awarded a grant for her research project into HIV prevention and PrEP use in women. She revealed, “The Gilead Fellowship Grants Program has enabled us to begin the next phase of our research investigating Australian women’s access to information on pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention, a population that has not yet benefited from advances in HIV prevention technologies.”

Dr Paul Slade, Senior Medical Director of Gilead Sciences ANZ, stated, “Our aim to improve the outcomes of people with viral diseases and certain cancers will only be met with investment in world-class science. It takes pioneering thinking and deep understanding of the social barriers to care to solve these complex issues and enable us to translate scientific advances into improved patient outcomes here in Australia.

“The Gilead Fellowship Grants Program aims to provide Australian researchers who are working across the spectrum of the healthcare ecosystem to identify and address the unmet need. We encourage anyone who is working in the focus areas to review the application process and apply.”

Program applications are open from 5 June until 18 August 2023. To apply, visit https://www.gilead.com.au/our-purpose/corporate-giving/gilead-australia-fellowship.
