Transfection remains a key technique in molecular biology, supporting applications ranging from protein expression studies to gene therapy development. However, variability in transfection efficiency can significantly impact experimental outcomes.

While flow cytometry has been the preferred method for evaluating transfection efficiency, it can be expensive, require specialised training and consume larger sample volumes. The LUNA-FX7 Automated Cell Counter from Logos Biosystems is designed to offer researchers a practical benchtop alternative by combining advanced image cytometry with dual-channel fluorescence detection.

A recent application note from Logos Biosystems suggests the instrument’s capability to rapidly assess GFP-, RFP- and dual-colour GFP/RFP-transfected HEK293 cells. Using high-resolution fluorescence imaging and interactive gating tools, the product is designed to allow researchers to accurately identify and quantify transfected cell populations, even when fluorescence expression levels are low. Comparison with conventional flow cytometry suggested high correlation (>0.98) across single- and dual-colour fluorescence assays, with the LUNA-FX7 designed to be a rapid and reliable alternative for transfection analysis with a simpler workflow and lower operational complexity.
