Enzo Life Sciences cellular senescence assays

Cellular senescence, also known as biological ageing, refers to permanent cell-cycle arrest, when cells are no longer capable of dividing but metabolically active. Senescent cells are characterised by an irreversible G1 growth arrest involving the repression of genes that drive cell cycle progression and the up regulation of cell cycle inhibitors like p16INK4a, p53 and its transcriptional target, p21CIP1. They are resistant to mitogen-induced proliferation and assume a characteristic enlarged, flattened morphology.

Understanding why cells undergo senescence and how it can affect complex biological processes is an important research area. Enzo Life Sciences offers a broad range of products for ageing research.

The cellular senescence activity assay will quantify SA-β-gal activity in a fluorescence plate reader. It features an easy-to-use protocol, with results in less than 90 min, and is fully compatible with all cell types.

The cellular senescence live cell analysis assay meanwhile registers quantitative senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity in live cells using flow cytometry or fluorescent microscopy. The sensitive assay kit uses fluorogenic substrate to measure SA-β-gal activity. It features a simple protocol with no permeabilisation required.
