The derivatives of arachidonic acid, also known as eicosanoids, are a group of biologically active oxygenated unsaturated fatty acids. They include prostaglandins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) and lipoxins. Eicosanoids have been shown to enhance as well as attenuate inflammation, and have also been linked to carcinogenesis.
