Science award nominations closing Friday

Nominations for two major Australian science prizes, the Clunies Ross Award and the Unsung Hero of Australian Science, close this Friday.
The Clunies Ross Foundation's award seeks to support Australian scientists and technologists, known and probably acknowledged by their own learned societies and professional associations, but who have not been accorded appropriate national recognition.
According to the foundation, the appropriate nominee is a person who has, often against difficulties and always with persistent commitment, made important contributions to science and its application for the economic, social or environmental benefit of Australia.

Meanwhile, the Australian Science Communicators' Unsung Hero award goes to a scientist or science communicator whose outstanding achievements have largely been unrecognised and unrewarded by their peers.
The ASC's Niall Byrne said the ideal nominee would be doing interesting research work which had public appeal and the potential to attract media attention.
Previous winners include Dr Carolyn Mountford, Dr Bobbie Vaile, Prof Chris Crossland, Dr Malcolm Gill, Dr David Jenkins, Ms Carla Litchfield and Dr Estelle Lazer.
