Isthmin-1 (ISM1) is a secreted adipokine with insulin-like properties that plays a key role in energy homeostasis, angiogenesis and tissue metabolism. ISM1 has an insulin-independent glucose uptake function in adipocytes, thus improving hyperglycaemia. Unlike insulin, it suppresses lipid synthesis in the liver, reducing hepatic lipid accumulation while increasing protein synthesis. This makes ISM1 an exciting new biomarker and potential therapeutic target for metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and MASH (hepatic steatosis).
