Canon’s imaging science prize open for entries

Wednesday, 23 May, 2012

Canon’s local research and development arm CiSRA, in collaboration with Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, is calling for Australian university students to enter the 2012 Extreme Imaging competition. Tertiary students who are developing a new technique or equipment to produce images as part of their supervised research project are eligible to enter the competition.

Stephen Hardy, Senior General Manager of CiSRA, said, “This competition gives Canon the opportunity to promote and celebrate Australian imaging science research. The prize will be awarded to the student that pushes the boundaries of imaging technology.

“The students could be studying across a number of different disciplines - engineering, robotics, physics or medicine. As long as imaging is at the heart of the project, students can enter.”

Last year’s first prize winner was Ariell Friedman and supervisors Dr Oscar Pizarro and Professor Stefan Williams from the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney for the project ‘Diver-based stereo 3D documentation of excavations in Pavlopetri’.

Other winning entries from last year included the capture of the first ever image of the shadow of a single atom to the development of a device that may be able to take a picture of the retina and asses the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

“We were extremely impressed with the quality of research from last year and we can’t wait to see what the entries reveal this year. CiSRA recently teamed up with Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum and the award ceremony will be held on 15 February 2013 where we will present the most outstanding entries,” said Hardy.

First prize is $5000 for the winning student or student group and $5000 for their supervisor. The runner-up will receive a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR.

There will also be a new prize for undergraduate students - they will be eligible for a $1000 prize for the winning student or students and $1000 for their supervisor. These prizes will be supplemented by $5000 worth of Canon equipment.
