Harmonised classification and labelling for three chemical substances

Friday, 29 January, 2010

The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of ECHA (European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki) has adopted opinions on the proposals for classification and labelling across Europe of three chemical substances as carcinogen, mutagen or toxic for reproduction.

The substances are:

Indium phosphide

The classification is currently not harmonised at EU level. RAC agreed with the proposal from France that the classification of the substance should be harmonised as a carcinogen and toxic for reproduction. RAC also proposed a classification for repeated dose toxicity from inhalation exposure. Indium phosphide is, for example, used as a semiconductor in the electronics industry.

Di-tert-butyl peroxide - DTBP

DTBP is currently classified at EU level for certain physico-chemical hazards. RAC agreed with the proposal from France to also classify it as a mutagen. DTBP is typically used by industry as an additive in polymerisation reactions.

Trixylyl phosphate

The classification is currently not harmonised at EU level. RAC agreed with the proposal from the Netherlands for a harmonised classification of toxic for reproduction. Trixylyl phosphate is mainly used as a fire-resistant hydraulic fluid, for example in industrial power generators.
