Tuesday, 25 October, 2011

Highly regarded marine scientist, John Gunn, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said the appointment will take effect on 28 November 2011.

“I congratulate Mr Gunn on his appointment and am sure his leadership will continue to support the internationally renowned work carried out at the Institute,” Senator Carr said.

“[His] background in marine science - with particular expertise in the fisheries area - experience on boards and his understanding of government will help him lead AIMS through the challenges of the coming five years.

“[He] is already an active member of Australia’s marine community and I look forward to his contribution to AIMS in his new role.”

Gunn has held senior positions in the marine science sector for more than 10 years and has advised the government on marine science issues. He has served on the Oceans Policy Science Advisory Group and other boards and committees.

“I would also like to thank Dr Ian Poiner, whom Mr Gunn is replacing as the Institute’s CEO. Dr Poiner has served AIMS well for the past seven years and has been a champion for the Institute and marine science generally. I wish him all the best for the future,” Senator Carr said.

Wayne Osborn, AIMS council chairperson, said the council was delighted with the appointment of Mr Gunn.

“John is extremely well credentialled for the role,” Osborn said. “On behalf of council I would like to pay tribute to Dr Ian Poiner for his outstanding contribution. Ian has set the bar high and we wish him well for the future.”
