Australia’s reputation as an international leader in research will continue after the announcement of nine high-level medical research programs worth $107 million over the next five years.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler said that these nine projects, funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Program Grants, support some of the highest profile and most distinguished researchers in the country.

“The grants are provided through the NHMRC. The individual grants will range from $5.2 million to $21.3 million over five years and each grant will enable Australia’s best and brightest to drive their own long-term research programs to address complex health problems,” he said.

The grants cover a range of areas from the basic science of immunology, public health research in stroke, mental health, breast cancer and a common childhood cancer.

NHMRC Program Grants provide support for teams of the highest quality and for researchers to drive their own five-year research projects to address complex health problems.
