Perth medical research centre underway
The commencement of the $100m medical research hub for the WA Institute of Medical Research at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre has been marked at a ceremony in Perth today.
WA Deputy Premier and Health Minister Dr Kim Hames and Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi were among the guests at the event that acknowledged the significant collaboration between the federal government, The University of Western Australia, the WA Institute for Medical Research and other partners.
When completed in 2013, the building will be able to accommodate up to 800 research staff who will undertake global research into treatments for cancers, diabetes, muscular diseases, liver diseases and more.
There will also be interactive areas and a demonstration laboratory to ensure the public, including school students, will be kept up to date with the latest advances in medical research.
