South Australian universities’ research projects have received $6.3m in funding to help combat antibiotic-resistant superbugs, develop a new treatment for cataracts and improve roadside and workplace drug testing.

These research projects are among 19 South Australian projects receiving a total of $6.3 million from the Australian Government's Linkage Projects scheme.

Using a $428,000 grant, the University of Adelaide will test and develop a new compound that has shown potential to counteract drug-resistant infections.

The University of South Australia will use a $290,376 grant to develop a new interocular lens to help treat cataracts - 2.7 million Australians are forecast to develop cataracts by 2021.

Flinders University will use a $245,538 grant to develop new technologies for roadside and workplace drug testing.
