The Federal Government has begun advertising for a new, full-time chief scientist.

The position has been upgraded from a part-time role to give it the prominence it deserves, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, said.

The current chief scientist, Dr Jim Peacock, has agreed to stay on in the role until a replacement is appointed.

Applications close on May 16.

Carr said the advertisements would call for a chief scientist who is able to provide expert advice to government that is current and covers the full spectrum of innovation, science, engineering, and research.

"The new chief scientist will be someone who is able to maintain strong academic, industry and community links whilst holding this position," he said.

"Someone who not only has an outstanding record of achievement in innovation and science but also has the respect of the science and research community."

He said the appointee would be expected to have a strong science advocacy role; to promote increased participation in science in educational institutions; and to strengthen collaborative links with science and research institutions, industry, and State and Territory governments.

Advertising for the position commenced in Australian newspapers today and will also be advertised in the international media shortly.
