Industry R&D spending shows first rise in four years

Business expenditure on R&D (BERD) in 2000-01 increased for the first time in four years, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data released today.
The figures also show that BERD was at a record high of $4.825 million over the period - 18 per cent higher than in 1999-2000, adjusted to current prices. Taking into account changes in prices and wages, though, the BERD increase was 12 per cent over 1999-2000.
BERD as a percentage of Australia's GDP increased to 0.72 per cent in 2000-01, still down on the high of 0.87 per cent in 1995-96.
Leading the charge was the finance and insurance sector, with a 91 per cent increase in R&D expenditure. The mining industry recorded a 57 per cent increase.
