Artificial heart device developer Ventracor has appointed a new director to its ranks.

The Sydney headquartered company, known until this month as MicroMedical, named commercial lawyer Elizabeth Nosworthy) as its newest non-executive director.

Nosworthy is currently chairman of Prime Infrastructure Management and a director of both retail giant David Jones and property investment group GPT Management.

Welcoming her to the company, Ventracor chairman John Massey said Nosworthy would add significant experience gained as a commercial lawyer and from her time as director of large corporations.

"Ms Nosworthy's appointment is part of a key strategy to ensure that the board's composition is consistent with the changing needs of Ventracor as it commences international commercialisation of its 'artificial heart' technology"," Massey said.

Nosworthy, who in 2001 received the Australian Institute of Company Directors' gold medal for outstanding contributions, said she was pleased to be joining Ventracor as it approached its first series of human clinical trials.
