Liberal Senator Kay Patterson's private member's bill overturning the ban on therapeutic cloning was passed last night by a margin of two: 34 to 32. 10 senators were absent for the vote.

The vote on the third reading of the bill was the same as the second earlier in the day with the exception of the additional no vote from Ross Lightwood, Liberal senator from WA.

The bill will now head to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to be debated within the next month.
