Federal Labor MPs have voted to give themselves a conscience vote on the issue of stem cell research.

The issue of whether excess IVF embryos should be made available for research purposes is on the agenda for next month's meeting of the Prime Minister and state and territory leaders.

Labor has set up a sub-committee of shadow ministers to report on the issue to next week's shadow cabinet meeting. But it has also agreed that any position taken on the subject by any Labor Party forum will not be binding on its MPs.
