Queensland University of Technology has appointed Michael Finney as founding chief executive officer of QUT Innovation, the university's research commercialisation company.

An engineer, Finney brings to the position more than 20 years of international industry and academic experience in research management, technology transfer and investment management in the physical and life sciences sectors.

"QUT Innovation's aim is to ensure future generations of Queenslanders enjoy the same lifestyle, health and environment that we have now by supporting future growth and the state's transformation to a knowledge-based economy," Finney said.

He holds an MBA from the University of New South Wales, a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from the University of Queensland and a Juris Doctor postgraduate degree in law.

"QUT has made considerable progress in expanding its research capability over the past few years and this increased research output now requires us to focus on commercialisation," Professor Peter Coaldrake, QUT Vice-Chancellor said.

"The establishment of QUT Innovation and the appointment of Michael Finney is an important step forward for the university."
