Adenosine 3, 5 cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) plays a critical role in the transmission of signals by functioning as a ‘second messenger’. Binding of hormones or ligands to their respective receptors can either inhibit or enhance the production of cAMP by changing the activity of the enzyme adenylate cyclase. Adenylate cyclase is a membrane-associated enzyme that catalyses the formation of cAMP from ATP. Intracellular cAMP levels, in turn, regulate enzymatic activity of numerous protein kinases, which phosphorylate specific targets setting off a cascade of cellular events. Because of the importance of cAMP as a cellular messenger, several different reading methodologies have been developed to measure cellular levels, one of which is AlphaScreen. Here we describe and demonstrate the ability of the Synergy 2 to quantitate cAMP using this methodology.

Theonyx is an automation platform developed by MWG Biotech in partnership with Sias AG. Theonyx is characterised by flexibility as the system's modular set-up allows the combination of a multitude of functions on just one robot. Liquid handling dynamics are driven by a micro annular gear pump mechanism within the robot arm itself. For the user this means a dynamic range of less than 1 µL up to more than 3 mL, within a single pipetting action, and without compromises in accuracy or precision.

MWG-Biotech's laboratory robot, RoboSmart, can completely automate, in one single step on one single robot platform, plasmid or PCR product purification, setup, processing, and subsequent purification of the sequencing reaction.

E.coli Genome Microarray

MWG-Biotech has launched the Pan E.coli Array. All 4.289 genes of the bacterium are represented on the array using MWG-Biotech's 1 gene/1 oligo method, where each bioinformatically designed HPSF oligonucleotide is 100% gene specific and thus guaranteed to identify the gene it was produced for. The organism used for MWG-Biotech's Pan E.coli Array is the strain K12, a non-pathogenic standard research organism. MWG-Biotech will soon introduce a modified version of the Pan E.coli Array to study pathogenic (disease-causing) effects of micro-organisms in detail. For this a combination of genes of E.coli K12 with about 1.200 additional genes of the pathogenic haemorrhagic (causing intestinal bleeding) E.coli strain 0157:H7 will be used. E.coli 0157:H7 has recently received public attention in food poisoning cases involving raw meat and apple juice.
