Academy of Science welcomes new front bench
The Australian Academy of Science has extended its congratulations to the new Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, former Environment Minister Greg Hunt, while acknowledging the valuable contribution of his predecessor and newly appointed Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne.
The Academy also welcomed new Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Craig Laundy and acknowledged the work of former Assistant Minister Karen Andrews, now Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills.
With the new ministry announced, the Academy said there is more to be done to maintain the focus on driving economic prosperity through ideas, science and innovation, with President Professor Andrew Holmes saying that “it is now time for the science and innovation sector to work closely with both sides of government and with the crossbenchers to ensure that the momentum is maintained”.
Professor Holmes said the academy wanted to “acknowledge the focus on STEM education and research from both sides of government over the past 12 months” — in particular, last year’s announcement of “the biggest science policy platform in a decade” in the National Innovation and Science Agenda.
“However, there is much more to be done and, with careful planning and investment, the Australian Academy of Science believes that it will be possible to achieve transformative outcomes for the Australian people and the Australian economy,” Professor Holmes said.
“It’s important we take a broad and united approach to the issues facing us, and fund a variety of research in a range of disciplines. If we can foster an environment where science can flourish, the benefits will be felt by every Australian.”
