CSIRO gets awarded for contributions to science

Wednesday, 20 October, 2010

The groundbreaking work of CSIRO researchers was recognised at the 2010 CSIRO Awards Ceremony.

Announcing the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister, Senator Kim Carr, said one of the great privileges of his position is the opportunity to honour Australia’s scientists.

“Our scientists are heroes who answer the call to make our world a better place,” Senator Carr said.

“Their research transforms every facet of our lives, from prolonging life to keeping our livestock healthy and our rivers clean.

Senator Carr presented the 2010 CSIRO Lifetime Achievement Medal to Dr Ta Yan Leong, whom he described as a national asset.

“For the past 25 years, Dr Leong has worked on fostering deep and trusting relationships with international partners such as China. These relationships have been vital to the success of many international science collaborations.”

Dr Leong was one of many CSIRO scientists being recognised for their talent and contribution to science.

This Livestock Genomics Team was awarded the CSIRO Chairman’s Medal.

“This team identified the urgent need to decode livestock genomes to progress animal sciences and improve industry productivity. They were instrumental in creating a blueprint of the sheep genome,” Senator Carr said.
