National Science Week 2011 grants are open

Thursday, 14 October, 2010

Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister Senator Kim Carr is encouraging individuals and organisations to apply for National Science Week grants and run events and activities that promote Australia’s talent in the area of science.

"Science underpins our economic development, by identifying ways to improve our productivity, living standards and environmental sustainability,” Senator Carr said.

“It is important that all Australians understand this and celebrate the contribution our world-leading researchers make to their lives.

“This is why, early this year, I released Inspiring Australia: A National Strategy for Engaging with the Sciences.

“National Science Week is integral to this strategy as it celebrates Australian science breakthroughs such as the black box flight recorder, Wi-Fi and the cochlear implant; and communicates the importance of science in our everyday lives.

“It also promotes science careers and encourages our youth to undertake primary, secondary and tertiary science studies.”

The Gillard government will provide over $8.9 billion for science, research and innovation in 2010-11 and is providing total funding of $500,000 to organisations and individuals to run science events and activities as part of the 2011 Science Week.

Highlights of this year's event included the Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga’s Border Stargaze event, where attendees learnt about the stars; and the hands-on Gold Coast City Council Science Fair.

National Science Week 2011 will run from 13 to 21 August. Applications for funding are open and close on Friday 22 October 2010. Visit www.scienceweek.gov.au for more information.
