Nominations open for 2014 GSK Award for Research Excellence
Pharmaceutical and healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has opened nominations for the 2014 GSK Award for Research Excellence (ARE). The prestigious award, now in its 34th year, recognises outstanding achievements in medical research and facilitates career development with potential importance to human health and Australian research.
The award has a history of supporting some of Australia’s most influential innovators in the medical research sector. Past recipients include malaria researcher Professor Alan Cowman (1998) and paediatric neurologist Professor Kathryn North (2011). Last year’s winner was Professor Ingrid Scheffer, whose clinical research has led to the recognition of several new epilepsy syndromes and the discovery of new causative genes in epilepsy.
“The work that GSK undertakes, our products and programs are the result of excellence and collaborations in medical research,” said GSK Medical Director Dr Andrew Yeates. “As such, we acknowledge the commitment and resources needed in order to achieve innovations in the research arena. GSK looks forward to the positive outcomes generated from the research through the assistance from the award.”
The winner of the award and the accompanying $80,000 grant will be announced on 5 November at the 12th Annual Research Australia Awards night in Sydney. Nominations can be submitted through the GSK ARE website and will close on 30 June.
