The Research Australia Awards recognise scientists, advocates, philanthropists and corporations who have made significant contributions across the categories of discovery, advocacy, philanthropy and lifetime achievement and, for the first time, achievements in health services research.

The 2014 Research Australia Awards include:

  • Griffith University Discovery Award
  • Advocacy Award
  • Leadership in Corporate Giving Award
  • Macquarie Group Foundation Great Australian Philanthropy Award
  • NSW Government Health Services Research Award
  • The Kids’ Cancer Project Lifetime Achievement Award
  • The Peter Wills Medal (for advancing Australia’s reputation within the sector).

In 2013, Simon McKeon AO was awarded with the Leadership and Innovation Award, recognising his work on the Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research.

The Health Services Research Award is a new category in 2014 which highlights the need to improve the efficiency, safety and delivery of healthcare in Australia as identified by the McKeon Review.

The GSK Award for Research Excellence, which recognises outstanding achievements in medical research, offers a grant of $80,000 to the recipient’s institute.

The winners will be announced on 5 November 2014 at the 12th Annual Research Australia Awards night in Sydney.

Diabetes Australia will also announce the winner of the Diabetes Australia Research Excellence Award, which offers a grant worth $50,000.

“Research Australia’s awards are a prestigious and highly regarded industry event. By partnering with organisations such as GSK and Diabetes Australia, the awards will continue to grow, and signify the importance of promoting and celebrating health and medical research in Australia,” Research Australia CEO and MD Elizabeth Foley said.

Nominations for the GSK award close 30 June 2014 and nominations for the Research Australia awards close 1 July 2014.
