Bioscience boost at La Trobe
Monday, 28 February, 2011
Life sciences at La Trobe University have received a boost with construction kicking off on the La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science (LIMS) facility.
The $94 million facility is expected to open in late 2012, and will sport research and teaching laboratories, office space, a lecture theatre, support spaces and an 'equipment barn.'
La Trobe expects the facility to generate $15 million in research income annually, and provide positions for up to 220 researchers.
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, turned the first sod at a ceremony last week.
"Biotechnology offers new weapons to fight disease, protect the environment, and improve industry productivity," said Senator Carr.
"Our investments in that vital research will support high-wage, high-tech jobs for Australians in our emerging biotechnology sector. The Government is proud to give the researchers of La Trobe the kit they need to remain at the forefront of their field."
The Federal Government invested $85.8 million in the project through the Education Investment Fund.
