The researchers at Biotron and the John Curtin School of Medical Research at ANU showed that the SARS coronavirus E protein forms ion channels.

Based on the research, Biotron has developed a screening test for the E protein and has screened its compound library for activity against the SARS E protein as well as other members of the coronavirus family, which are responsible for about 25 per cent of colds as well as other diseases. The company has identified a number of compounds with good activity, which are able to inhibit the replication of the SARS virus.

The work has been supported by a Commonwealth government BIF grant awarded to Biotron in November last year to support the development of the company's Virion platform technology.
