Senator Kim Carr has been named as the minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in the new Labor Government.

Carr, a senator from Victoria, held the shadow position from December last year and under the Latham shadow ministry in 2003/2004.

A former secondary school teacher, he is well versed with the portfolio and is understood to favour government intervention to support industry.

The new minister for education is deputy prime minister Julia Gillard, who will also retain her industrial relations portfolio.

Simon Crean is the new minister for trade.

Carr's portfolio is part of the inner ministry.
