Melbourne agbiotech Hexima has signed an agreement with the CSIRO for a seed breeding program for cotton.

The agreement will see CSIRO breed Hexima’s defensin gene – which codes for proteins that fight against bacteria and fungi – into three of CSIRO’s cotton lines.

Hexima will use the seeds for field trials in the 2010/2011 season. Hexima is also testing defensin-based fungal resistance in corn and canola.
