National Science Week
Events are lined up around the country this week to entertain, educate and inspire people from all walks of life about science in the annual event, National Science Week (16-24 August).
The event marks a celebration of the inspiring science taking place across Australia and here is just a taste of what’s on.
The Australian Academy of Science is holding a National Women of Science Wikibomb to address the fact that many accomplished women scientists have little or no presence on the world’s most popular online encyclopaedia. More than a hundred people across Australia will take part to create and improve the Wikipedia pages of Australian female scientists.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will showcase giant crystal structures in cities across the country in recognition of 2014 being the International Year of Crystallography. The intricacies of X-ray crystallography will be on show with large-scale models of the atoms that make up common materials.
Neural Knitworks is a collaborative project involving knitting and neuroscience. Teaching people how to knit and knot nerve cells while learning about the mind and brain health, this travelling exhibition involves artists, scientists, communicators and people of all ages and persuasions.
