Nominations open for 2013 NSW Science and Engineering Awards
The NSW Science and Engineering Awards recognise and reward leading researchers in science and engineering for cutting-edge work that generates economic, health, environmental or technological benefits for the state.
The awards also aim to engage and involve the NSW research community and the public in promoting the value of science and engineering, and to encourage careers in both fields.
Scientists, engineers, researchers and teachers are now encouraged to submit nominations. There are eight awards categories, each carrying a prize of $5000:
- Excellence in Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry and Physics
 - Excellence in Biological Sciences (ecology, environmental, agricultural and organismal)
 - Excellence in Biological Sciences (cell and molecular, medical, veterinary and genetics)
 - Excellence in Engineering and Information and Communications Technology
 - Emerging Research
 - Renewable Energy Innovation
 - Innovation in Public Sector Science and Engineering
 - Innovation in Science and Mathematics Education

The eighth category is an acknowledgement of the role primary and secondary teachers play in motivating and inspiring their students.
The judging panel will also recommend a NSW Scientist of the Year for 2013. The winner of this award will receive a cash prize of $55,000.
Application forms can be found at www.chiefscientist.nsw.gov.au/awards and nominations are open until 15 September. The awards will be presented during a gala dinner at Government House, Sydney, on 1 November.
