Friday, 10 February, 2012
Nominate your favourite researcher - or even yourself - for the Victorian Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research for 2012.
“The Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research is a great opportunity for all Victorians to recognise the achievements of young people in the health and medical research field,” Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said.
Past winners of the award have worked in a range of health and medical research fields including cancer, diabetes, cochlear implants and tuberculosis.
The 2011 winner of the Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research, Dr Wen Qiu, was recognised for her ground-breaking research into the spread of breast and ovarian cancers.
The Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research includes $40,000 in prize money, with $16,000 presented to the winner and $8,000 provided to each of three commendees. The award is an initiative of the Victorian Government and the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR).
The Jack & Robert Smorgon Families Foundation also awards a $30,000 prize to the research institute associated with the work of the Premier’s Award winner. Last year, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where Dr Qiu works, received the $30,000 Jack & Robert Smorgon Families Award for the role the centre plays at the forefront of cancer research.
Applications for the 2012 Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research close at 5pm, Wednesday 21 March 2012.
The winner and commendees will be announced during ASMR Medical Research Week in the first week of June 2012.
