Symposium to open cancer proteomics centre

The ACRF International Centre for the Proteome of Cancer (ProCan) is holding a symposium to celebrate its official opening this week. The opening comes seven months after the initial announcement of the facility and two months after it was awarded additional funding from the NSW Government.

The goal of ProCan is to transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. Using specialised equipment funded by the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, the facility will analyse tens of thousands of types of cancer, using tissue samples from all over the world, in order to develop a library of information to advance scientific discovery and enhance clinical treatment worldwide. The NSW Government funds will help provide crucial ‘big data’ analysis infrastructure and expertise to enable ProCan to achieve its goals, which also include facilitating collaboration and open access to research results in order to boost cancer research efforts worldwide.

The two-day symposium provides the opportunity to hear from leading pioneers in the field of cancer research and their future vision. Scientists will explore current research projects and technologies that will advance our understanding of patient treatment in the years to come, with symposium tracks set to include:

  • Creating Protein Expression Maps
  • Using Protein Expression Maps

The symposium will take place at the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, from 15–16 September.
