Rigaku has launched the Desktop Minstrel UV, a fully automated UV imaging and protein crystal monitoring system. The instrument uses UV fluorescence microscopy to successfully monitor crystal growth by distinguishing protein crystals from non-protein crystals, such as salt.

The instrument uses Clean Lite Technology and features a UV microscope that provides a wavelength that matches the absorption of the fluorescing amino acids, such as tryptophan. The fluorescing light is digitally recorded by a camera with a CCD sensor.

The system is suitable for the evaluation of a large number of crystallisation experiments. It allows researchers to accurately harvest protein crystals for data collection, or design follow-up experiments.
