The AusBiotech 2005 'Linking the Region' National Conference kicked off in Perth last night with the presentation of the chairman's Industry Medal to Peptech (ASX: PTD) executive chairman Mel Bridges and Victorian Innovation Minister John Brumby in recognition of outstanding contributions to the biotechnology industry.

"Biotechnology in Australia is an exciting, dynamic and growing industry which I feel very privileged to be a part of," said Bridges. "It is an honour to be acknowledged with this year's Industry Medal."

The AusBiotech chairman's Industry Medal and the chairman's Public Sector Medal, formally known as the president's medals, are awarded annually to two individuals who have made significant achievements and contributions towards the growth of the biotechnology industry, through either the public or commercial sectors.

AusBiotech chairman Professor Simon Carroll said Bridges' contribution to the biotechnology industry had proved substantial over time.

Bridges has more than 30 years experience in the biotechnology and healthcare industries and has founded several biotech and medical device companies. He joined Peptech as chairman in December 2002 and was appointed executive chairman in January 2004. At last year's AusBiotech conference in Brisbane he was awarded the inaugural 'Bioneer of the Year Award' for his contribution to the biotechnology industry in Queensland.

In accepting his award John Brumby, said biotechnology was playing a key role in building a strong, innovative and dynamic Victorian economy.

Carroll highlighted the Victorian Government's commitment to biotechnology with funding of more than $1.4 billion since 1999 to innovation, much of which has been targeted to the biotech sector and research.

"Minister Brumby remains Victoria's loudest and most articulate proponent for making Victoria a top five global biotech hub by 2010," said Carroll.
