Molecular code cracked: potential for future treatments of genetic disease

20 August, 2012

Scientists have cracked a code underlying recognition of RNA molecules by a superfamily of RNA-binding proteins called pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins. This may open the way to destroying or correcting defective gene products, such as those that cause genetic disorders in humans.

Roche MagNA Pure LC 2.0 system for monitoring DNA in therapeutic proteins and monoclonal antibody drugs

07 March, 2012

To ensure product safety, clearance of host-cell DNA is essential when manufacturing therapeutic proteins and monoclonal antibody (mAB) drugs. Using the MagNA Pure LC 2.0 System from Roche, scientists have developed and validated an automated process for monitoring clearance of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell DNA during the capture and polishing steps, when processing therapeutic proteins and mAB drugs.

Ancient penguin DNA is key to conservation

24 February, 2012

Conservation of the King Penguin is proving successful following research showing that the species has recovered past genetic diversity in just 80 years, despite a prior threat of extinction.

GeneCopoeia ORF cDNA clones

20 February, 2012

GeneCopoeia has introduced a budget-friendly collection of human ORF cDNA clones. The default format for these clones is bacterial stock, with additional charges for 10 and 50 ug purified plasmis.

DNA base modification detection using single-molecule, real-time sequencing

01 December, 2011

Base modifications are important to the understanding of biological processes such as gene expression, host-pathogen interactions, DNA damage and DNA repair.

Epoch multi-volume nucleic acid quantification application note

25 May, 2011

Nucleic acids isolated from a variety of sample types such as animal models, body fluids or eukaryotic and bacterial cells provide the starting material for a broad range of downstream applications including gene expression, genotyping, sequencing and cloning. Quantification of isolated nucleic acid is necessary prior to introduction into these applications. The Epoch Spectrophotometer System provides a means of obtaining accurate measurement over a wide range of sample concentrations and volumes, including microvolume quantification. Comparison to other microvolume dedicated devices, such as NanoDrop, shows equivalent performance.

Integrated DNA Technologies PrimeTime Pre-designed qPCR Assays

18 April, 2011

PrimeTime Pre-designed qPCR Assays work for human, mouse and rat transcriptomes. Users can search and select from the online database that contains thousands of assays. All assays are designed to span exons, protect against non-specific amplifications, avoid known SNPs and minimise the impact of secondary structure. Consisting of two primers and a hydrolysis probe, all three components are shipped in a single tube and are claimed to provide \>90% efficiency.

07 April, 2011 by

The Enzo Life Sciences CGH labelling kit for oligo arrays has been optimised to label DNA for dual sample comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) assays on Agilent oligonucleotide arrays.

Caliper Life Sciences LabChip XT automated nucleic acid fractionation

10 March, 2011 by

Current next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows have numerous manual processes that bottleneck throughput and contribute to process inefficiency. One of the most time-consuming tasks is gel-based size selection during the library-generation process. In addition to being labour intensive and not scalable, manual methods introduce run-to-run and operator-to-operator variability. Furthermore, the imprecision of this manual excision results in the size selection precision (width of the selected band) being typically no better than ±10% of the median fragment size (eg, 400 bp ± 40 bp).
